BLM proposes amendments for dedicated hunter rule changes in Utah

The Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) Regional Advisory Council (RAC) meeting held on May 14, 2025, focused on several key topics, including amendments to the dedicated hunter program and public feedback regarding hunting regulations.

Brian Christiansen, who oversees the dedicated hunter program, addressed the council and public attendees, emphasizing the complexities of the program, which spans three years. He explained that while the DWR aims to maintain consistency for dedicated hunters, changes to hunting units and regulations can sometimes necessitate adjustments. This was highlighted by recent modifications to specific hunting units, which included changes in weapon restrictions and season boundaries.

During the meeting, two public comments were discussed. The first expressed concern that dedicated hunters should be allowed to hunt under the rules that were in place when they drew their permits. The second comment requested that if a hunt is canceled, the hours worked should be refunded or transferred. Christiansen clarified that while the DWR strives to honor the original terms for dedicated hunters, certain changes are unavoidable due to management needs. He noted that the rules governing refunds are dictated by separate regulations, and refunds are only permitted under specific circumstances.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to improve clarity in the dedicated hunter program rules, ensuring that all participants understand the implications of any changes to their hunting units or regulations. The DWR plans to continue engaging with the public to address concerns and enhance the hunting experience in Utah.
