Fortville celebrates opening of state-of-the-art elementary school with community leaders

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 17, 2025, to celebrate the opening of the new Fortville Elementary School. This event marked a significant milestone for the community, emphasizing the school’s commitment to providing a modern and safe learning environment for students.

During the ceremony, various community leaders and contributors were recognized for their efforts in bringing the project to fruition. Town Manager Joe Renner and Adam Zakliakowski were specifically acknowledged for their support in the planning and permitting processes. The collaborative work of vendors, including Indie Business Furniture and the AECOM team, was also highlighted, showcasing the community's collective effort in the school’s development.

The new Fortville Elementary School is designed to meet the educational needs of today’s students while preparing them for future challenges. The building features a layout that encourages collaboration among students and staff, with an emphasis on safety and mental wellness. Key design elements include secure entry points, ample natural light, and flexible learning spaces that adapt to evolving teaching methods.

Financial responsibility was a core focus throughout the project, with the school corporation ensuring that the tax debt rate for the community remained unchanged. This approach reflects a commitment to transparency and respect for community trust, prioritizing long-term financial health over additional expenditures.

The community's input was instrumental in shaping the school’s vision, as over 300 local champions participated in developing a growth plan that led to the decision to build the new elementary school.
