DDOT outlines phased streetscape construction along Connecticut Avenue to minimize disruptions

The recent pre-construction public meeting held by the Department of Transportation (DDOT) for the Connecticut Avenue Streetscape and Deckover Project outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at minimizing disruptions to local businesses and traffic during construction. The project, set to unfold in phases, will focus on enhancing the streetscape while ensuring that at least one lane of traffic remains open at all times.

The streetscape work will be executed in sections, allowing crews to concentrate on one side of the street at a time. The initial phase will commence on the median from California Street to S Street, followed by work on the Center Island area at California Street. Subsequent phases will progress southbound along Connecticut Avenue, with crews moving to the northbound side once they reach Q Street. This segmented approach is designed to maintain pedestrian access and minimize impacts on local businesses, as pedestrians will be redirected to open sidewalks during construction.

While the streetscape work will not necessitate traffic detours, the deckover project will involve the closure of service lanes, requiring a designated detour for traffic. Q Street between Connecticut Avenue and Nineteenth Street will be converted to two-way traffic to facilitate movement around the construction zone. Clear signage will be installed to guide drivers through the detour.

DDOT emphasized the importance of public engagement throughout the project, committing to keep residents and businesses informed about construction updates and milestones. The department aims to ensure that access to local retail and restaurants remains uninterrupted, even as construction progresses.
