Beaufort County Council allocates $1.9M for public safety and community development projects

The Town Council of Hilton Head Island is prioritizing public safety in its proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, with significant investments aimed at enhancing community security and support for local law enforcement. During the budget workshop held on May 12, 2025, officials confirmed the continuation of a $550 monthly stipend for approximately 15 Beaufort County sheriff's officers residing on the island, alongside holiday bonuses for all sheriff's office employees working south of the Bridal.

A key highlight of the budget is the allocation of $50,000 for a public safety department assessment, which aligns with the town's strategic plan. This assessment is expected to guide future investments in public safety, ensuring that expenditures reflect the community's identified priorities. "Public safety is one of those key strategies," noted a council member, emphasizing the importance of matching budget allocations with strategic goals.

In addition to public safety, the budget proposal includes funding for various affiliated agencies, with six out of eleven applications recommended for a total of $1.9 million. These agencies include the Island Recreation Association and the Coastal Discovery project, among others.

The council also addressed the distribution of previously approved funds for Habitat for Humanity and the Coastal Community Development Corporation, confirming that $1.1 million has been invested to support housing initiatives on the island.
