Shawnee County officials have approved significant funding for community improvements during the recent commission meeting held on May 19, 2025. The most notable decision was the approval of a contract for the installation of turf surfacing at the Shawnee Tenement Circle Playground, with a budget of $78,919.35 sourced from the 2025 capital maintenance funds. This initiative aims to enhance the safety and play experience for children in the area, covering an expansive 5,175 square feet with a durable turf designed to withstand heavy use.
Tim Lorev, the director of the Parks and Recreation department, highlighted the importance of this upgrade, noting that the new turf will provide a safer play environment compared to traditional surfaces. This initiative, funded through grants, will feature two billboards running simultaneously for eight weeks, followed by two additional billboards in different locations for another eight weeks. This campaign aims to raise awareness and promote safety within the community.
Furthermore, the Health Department received approval to reinstate a nurse position dedicated to STI services and infectious disease management, reinforcing the county's commitment to public health.
Lastly, the Shawnee County Elections Office was granted permission to solicit bids for the delivery of election equipment, ensuring that the county is prepared for upcoming electoral processes.
