Morgan County sets ribbon cutting for $46 million new judicial campus on July 2

The Martinsville Board of Works and Common Council meeting on May 12, 2025, focused on the upcoming completion of the new judicial campus, a significant development for Morgan County. The new facility, which is set to open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 2, represents a $46 million investment funded by local tax dollars.

The new judicial campus will feature over 60,000 square feet of parking and 41 restrooms, addressing current facility limitations. The existing courthouse, which houses six courts and support staff, will undergo extensive renovations, including both interior and exterior updates. An additional wing will be added to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as current facilities do not adequately meet accessibility standards.

Concerns were raised about the existing courthouse's infrastructure, particularly regarding emergency access. The current elevator system is insufficient for transporting patients in emergencies, requiring emergency personnel to navigate stairs, which poses safety risks.

As the transition to the new facility approaches, city officials emphasized the importance of these upgrades for improving public safety and accessibility in the judicial system. The move is expected to take place in mid-July, following the ribbon-cutting event.
