Dona Ana County Commission unanimously approves economic ordinance repeal and conducts business updates

The Board of County Commissioners for Doña Ana County convened on May 13, 2025, to discuss several key issues and initiatives impacting the community. The meeting, held at the government center in Las Cruces, included unanimous approval of all consent agenda items and significant updates from various county officials.

One of the main topics was the repeal of the boutique unlimited economic development ordinance, which was necessary to close out a project that had successfully met its required metrics. Additionally, the commission approved a revised code of conduct, incorporating further revisions to enhance governance.

Assessor Eugenia Gina Montoya Ortega reported that notices of property value were sent out on May 1, marking the beginning of protest season. Residents who disagree with their property valuations can submit protests online or in person, with a deadline set for June 2 due to the Memorial Day holiday. The assessor also reminded veterans that exemption certificates are being accepted, although those with percentage disability exemptions will need to wait until February 2026 to apply.

In staff updates, Health and Human Services Director Jamie Michael provided insights into expenditures for the health care assistance program. Human Resources Director Meg Haynes recognized county employees for their outstanding service, including April's Employee of the Month awards. Notably, Deputy Michael Hogue of the sheriff's office received a special recognition award.

Interim Fire Chief Andy Bowen introduced Cody Haver as the new deputy chief, responsible for fire prevention efforts in the county. IT Director Kent English paid tribute to former IT Director Bob Bunting, who recently passed away after 17 years of service.

The meeting also featured presentations from the IT department and updates from the county's lobbyist regarding key initiatives in Santa Fe, following the recent legislative session. Four proclamations were issued, recognizing International Audit Awareness Month, National Interpreter Day, National Hospital Week, and Economic Development Week.

This meeting highlighted the county's ongoing commitment to transparency and community engagement, with officials encouraging residents to stay informed about local developments. The next Board of County Commissioners meeting is scheduled for May 27, 2025.
