Guilford County Schools honors National Volunteer Week and recognizes community contributions

In the heart of Guilford County, a sense of community and commitment filled the air during the recent Guilford County Schools Board of Education meeting held on April 8, 2025. As board members gathered, the atmosphere was charged with gratitude and recognition, particularly for the contributions of volunteers who play a vital role in the educational landscape.

Superintendent Whitney Oakley opened the meeting with heartfelt reflections on her journey through Guilford County Schools, emphasizing the importance of creating opportunities for students to explore their passions and dreams. "The earlier we can expose them to what they can do... that's the work that we do to prepare them for the world," she shared, highlighting her dedication to fostering an environment where students can thrive.

The meeting also marked the celebration of National Volunteer Week, taking place from April 20 to 26, 2025. Board member Pastor Alan Scharouse read a proclamation recognizing the invaluable contributions of over 13,000 volunteers who have collectively dedicated more than 220,000 service hours to the district. This acknowledgment underscored the collaborative spirit of the community, as the board encouraged all citizens to honor those who serve in local public schools. "We are truly better together and cannot do this work without them," the proclamation stated, reinforcing the essential role of volunteers in transforming educational outcomes.
