Nora Branch Library celebrates renovation and summer reading program launch

In the heart of Indianapolis, the Nora Branch Library recently celebrated its grand reopening, showcasing a stunning renovation that has transformed the space into a vibrant community hub. Under the warm glow of city hall lights, President of the Board of Trustees, Ray Biederman, expressed his excitement about the branch's new look and its readiness for the upcoming summer reading program, a cherished tradition that kicks off on May 31.

Biederman highlighted the importance of the summer reading initiative, which fosters literacy and a love for learning among readers of all ages. He shared personal anecdotes about his family's summer reading experiences, emphasizing the program's role in building strong reading habits. With registration already open, the library is poised to welcome families eager to participate in a robust lineup of events and activities designed for children, teens, and adults.

Branch Manager Josh Crane took the stage to detail the library's rich history and recent upgrades. Originally opened in 1971, the Nora Branch has undergone significant changes, including accessibility improvements and the addition of study rooms. Crane noted that the renovations have made the library brighter and more inviting, with many visitors commenting on its cozy atmosphere.

The Nora Branch serves a diverse community of over 50,000 residents, with nearly half identifying as people of color. Crane emphasized the library's commitment to inclusivity, showcasing features like a universal changing station and a hearing loop system to better serve individuals with disabilities. He also shared impressive statistics from the library's reopening period, including nearly 9,000 cardholders and over 8,600 visits in just a month.

As the meeting progressed, Crane highlighted various programs that have reestablished the library's presence in the community, such as the Graphic Novel Book Club and family story times. Partnerships with local organizations, including the Japan America Society and the Coalition for our Immigrant Neighbors, aim to further integrate the library into the fabric of the community.

Looking ahead, Crane outlined his vision for the Nora Branch, focusing on curating a collection that reflects the interests of its users and enhancing community engagement.
