Nikiski Recreation Center plans community-driven master plan and expands swim lessons

A vibrant future for recreational services in the Kenai Peninsula Borough is on the horizon, as the local committee highlighted ambitious plans during the recent Budget Work Session. The meeting, held on May 19, 2025, showcased the borough's commitment to enhancing community engagement through a variety of recreational programs.

Key among the discussions was the borough's mission to provide quality recreational opportunities that foster a connected and healthy community. The committee reported significant accomplishments over the past year, including the successful celebration of the 50th anniversary of local recreational services, which featured community events and the distribution of 250 school supply-filled backpacks to children.

A standout achievement was the training of four new water safety instructors, enabling the expansion of swim lesson offerings. This initiative aims to double the number of swim lessons available in the coming year, reflecting a strong commitment to water safety and community engagement.

The meeting also addressed the growing popularity of the Nikiski Hockey Association, which has seen participation soar from 66 to 104 skaters. The association's success was celebrated, with local teams achieving notable victories, including a state championship win.
