Concord City Council considers funding for homelessness and social worker support

The resident pointed out that the current budget allocation of $25,000 for mental health initiatives seems insufficient given the surge in homelessness in Concord and surrounding areas.

Karen Jansen, Executive Director of the Concord Coalition to End Homelessness, also addressed the council, thanking them for their past support. She requested an additional $20,000 to enhance the winter shelter's operations, which currently lacks a warming center. Jansen detailed the coalition's efforts to provide shelter during severe cold weather, noting that they had to extend their hours to accommodate the increasing number of individuals seeking refuge. This winter, the shelter averaged 41 occupants, with some nights reaching up to 47 people.

Jansen explained that the requested funds would allow the coalition to hire two additional seasonal staff members to keep the shelter open on weekends and during afternoons. This expansion aims to better serve the community and assist individuals in transitioning to permanent housing.

The discussions underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to address homelessness and mental health in Concord, as community leaders consider how best to allocate resources in the upcoming budget. The meeting concluded with a recognition of the critical role that social services play in enhancing public safety and supporting vulnerable populations.
