East End House leaders advocate for new facilities to boost community services

At a recent Cambridge Ordinance Committee meeting, community leaders passionately advocated for the East End House, emphasizing its critical role in supporting local seniors and families. Fran Menezes, president of East End East Cambridge, highlighted the center's importance, stating, "East End House isn't just important to me. It's important to the whole Cambridge community." She urged decision-makers to consider funding for a new facility, which would allow for expanded programs and services, particularly for seniors.

The meeting also featured Robert Simha, vice president of the East Cambridge planning team, who praised the collaborative effort in reviewing a biomed development proposal. He noted the pressing need for additional public services as the neighborhood anticipates a significant population increase. Simha emphasized that the community's needs must be prioritized in any development plans.

Susan Lapier, chair of the East End House board, echoed these sentiments, calling for support from BioMed Realty's proposed development at 320 Charles Street. She described East End House as a "lifeline" for many residents and stressed the urgency of upgrading its facilities to meet growing demands.

Michael Delia, the executive director of East End House, warned that the current building is failing and could only last another three to five years. He urged the city to support the partnership with BioMed Realty, which would enable the center to double its capacity and enhance its services.

Community members voiced their support for the proposal, sharing personal stories of how East End House has positively impacted their lives. However, some raised concerns about the adequacy of the proposed community benefits, suggesting that the funding should be more in line with similar development projects in the area.
