Mayor Whitmire declares April 20 2025 Axelrad Day in Houston

Axelrad, a beloved Houston venue, was honored with a proclamation during the city council meeting on May 20, 2025, celebrating its 10-year anniversary as a community cornerstone. Mayor John Whitmire praised Axelrad for its significant contributions to the city, highlighting its role as a vibrant music venue and a steadfast community partner during crises, including Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The mayor declared April 20, 2025, as "Axelrad Day," recognizing the venue's transformation from an abandoned building into a cultural hub that has hosted over 2,000 musicians and supported more than 1,000 nonprofit organizations. Council members Abby Kamen and Evan Shabazz joined in expressing gratitude for Axelrad's commitment to community resilience and artistic expression.

Co-founder Monty Large reflected on the venue's journey, emphasizing its focus on community over profit. He shared plans to commemorate both Axelrad's anniversary and the building's centennial with a special vinyl record of jazz performances.
