DeKalb County Fire Department seeks to enhance EMS staffing and resources

The DeKalb County Emergency Response and Public Safety (ERPS) Committee convened on May 20, 2025, to discuss critical updates regarding local emergency services, including ambulance operations and fire department staffing.

A significant topic of discussion was the expansion of the Grady contract, which was necessary due to financial losses experienced by Grady Health System. Five new ambulances, approved last year, are now in service, with plans to maintain at least ten ambulances operational daily. The fire department's staffing was another focal point, with approximately 50 recruits currently in training. The chief noted a steady turnover rate among staff, attributed to various factors, including compensation and job satisfaction. The department is actively working to retain personnel through improved benefits, including a traditional pension plan, which is seen as a crucial factor in long-term retention.

The meeting also covered the utilization rates of emergency services, which are currently around 60%. This figure reflects both increased staffing and a decrease in call volume, contributing to a more manageable workload for crews.

Lastly, the committee approved contracts for public safety communications technology and helicopter maintenance services, ensuring that emergency response capabilities remain robust and effective.
