Hermosa Beach Commission reviews beer sales permit for South Beach Golf Club

The Hermosa Beach Planning Commission convened on May 20, 2025, to discuss a conditional use permit that could enhance the local dining and entertainment scene. The proposal, presented by Assistant Planner Johnny Case, seeks to allow the South Beach Golf Club to sell beer for on-site consumption at their facility located at 1601 Pacific Coast Highway, Suite 180.

The South Beach Golf Club, which has been operational since late 2024 as a virtual golf facility, is requesting permission to sell canned beer only, with no draft or bottled options available. The proposed hours for alcohol sales are Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 9 PM and Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM. Beer would be served only upon request at the reception desk, ensuring a controlled environment for patrons.

City staff evaluated the application against the Hermosa Beach municipal code and found it consistent with required findings for conditional use permits. The police department reviewed the proposal and expressed no objections, provided that certain conditions are met. These conditions include adherence to the submitted plans and maintaining the specified hours of operation.

Public engagement was a key aspect of the review process, with 953 notices sent to nearby residents and property owners, alongside a legal advertisement and on-site postings to inform the community about the proposal. The project is also deemed exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act, allowing it to move forward without extensive environmental review.

The Planning Commission is expected to vote on the resolution to approve the conditional use permit in the coming weeks, which could mark a significant step in diversifying the offerings at the Hermosa Pavilion and enhancing the overall experience for visitors and residents alike.
