SABA promotes May as Bike Month to encourage local cycling initiatives

The City Council meeting on May 20, 2025, highlighted the ongoing celebration of May as Bike Month, a campaign aimed at encouraging more residents to choose cycling for short trips around Sacramento. This initiative, which has been active for over 20 years, has shifted its focus from merely tracking miles ridden to promoting behavior change among new riders.

The Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA) has taken the lead in organizing events throughout the month, with over 70 activities planned in Sacramento alone. The goal is to engage the community in cycling, emphasizing that many daily car trips can be easily replaced with bike rides, particularly those under five miles. This shift not only aims to reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions but also promotes physical and mental wellness among residents.

With over 600 workplaces participating and approximately 12,000 individuals riding their bikes, the campaign has already seen significant engagement. Since its inception four years ago, participants have collectively cycled over 9 million miles, with aspirations to reach 10 million miles this May. The success of this initiative is expected to bolster calls for improved cycling infrastructure, making streets safer for all users.

As the meeting progressed, the council members acknowledged the importance of community involvement in achieving climate goals and enhancing local transportation options. The enthusiasm for Bike Month reflects a broader commitment to fostering a healthier, more sustainable Sacramento.
