Sacramento City Council to designate San Francisco Boulevard as historic landmark

In a significant move to preserve Sacramento's cultural heritage, the City Council convened on May 20, 2025, to discuss the landmark nomination of San Francisco Boulevard. This public roadway, located in District 6, is recognized for its unique historical significance as part of the City Beautiful Movement infrastructure from the early 20th century.

Henry Fuse, a preservation planner with the City of Sacramento, presented the nomination, highlighting the boulevard's distinctive features, including its wide lanes, median strips lined with California fan palms, and deciduous shade trees. The nomination process was prompted by community concerns over the decline of the palm trees due to disease and subsequent maintenance actions by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. The Preservation Commission had previously recommended the nomination, affirming the boulevard's eligibility for listing on the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources.

Public support for the nomination was evident, with several residents and community organizations voicing their enthusiasm during the meeting. Speakers included William Berg, president of Preservation Sacramento, who emphasized the importance of recognizing historic places throughout the city. Other residents, such as Shirley Daffin and Ian Thompson, shared personal connections to the boulevard, describing it as a vital community space that fosters neighborly interactions and serves as a picturesque gateway to the Colonial Heights neighborhood.
