Laguna Niguel designates May 23 as National Poppy Day to honor veterans

Laguna Niguel City Council has officially designated May 23, 2025, as National Poppy Day, a proclamation aimed at honoring the sacrifices of veterans and active-duty service members. During the council meeting on May 20, Mayor Ray Genaway presented the proclamation to representatives of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 281, who accepted it with gratitude and shared the significance of the day.

National Poppy Day is celebrated across the United States, where citizens wear and display poppies as a tribute to those who have served in the military. This tradition, which began shortly after World War I, connects the bright red flower with the sacrifices made by service members. The American Legion Auxiliary has promoted the poppy as a symbol of remembrance since 1921, inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields," which reflects on the poppies that grew on battlefields.

Mayor Genaway encouraged all residents and visitors of Laguna Niguel to participate in National Poppy Day, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who have died for liberty and supporting living veterans and their families. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 281 also highlighted their ongoing efforts to support veterans through various programs, including wreaths across America and honor flights to Washington, D.C.
