Lake County initiates Saunders Road project amid water main replacement plans

The Village of Riverwoods is making significant strides in local infrastructure improvements, as highlighted in the recent Board of Trustees meeting held on May 20, 2025. A key focus of the meeting was the ongoing road work on Saunders Road, which is set to advance following confirmation from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The project is scheduled for a letting on June 13, and officials are optimistic about its progress.

A major concern addressed was a water main leak discovered beneath Saunders Road. The leak, located approximately 10 feet underground, has been repaired, but the aging cast iron pipe poses a risk for future issues. To prevent further complications after investing $3 million in road renovations, the board has directed engineering firm GHA to propose a complete replacement of the problematic water main section and its valve vault. This proactive measure aims to ensure the longevity of the road repairs and minimize future disruptions.

In addition to Saunders Road, the Lake County Department of Transportation has commenced its 2025 road patching project, which includes Riverwoods Road between Illinois Route 22 and Deerfield Road. Residents should anticipate delays and flaggers in the area as this work progresses.

The meeting also touched on local wildlife safety, with the installation of wildlife crossing signs on Saunders Road to protect the returning Sandhill Cranes. These signs aim to alert drivers to the potential presence of these birds, which have been spotted annually in the area.

Further updates included the completion of demolition work at the Federal Life site, which will soon transition to erosion control measures. Plans for reworking the existing detention basin are underway, with construction expected to begin later this summer. Additionally, the demolition of a house at 3680 Deerfield Road is nearing completion, pending final inspection.
