San Bernardino Valley College secures LA84 grant for youth health clinics

A significant boost for youth health initiatives in San Bernardino was announced at the recent City Council meeting, as an adjunct professor from San Bernardino Valley College revealed the successful acquisition of a grant from the LA84 Foundation. This grant, stemming from the revenue generated by the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, aims to promote health and wellness among local youth.

The professor detailed that the program will target students from third to eighth grade, offering clinics designed to foster healthy lifestyles, self-esteem, and resilience. With plans to conduct around 20 clinics, the initiative aims to reach approximately 1,000 youths, although expectations suggest that number could be much higher. The clinics will be held either at local schools or at the college itself, ensuring accessibility for participants.

In a collaborative effort, local high school coaches from Pacific, Cajon, and San Bernardino High Schools will facilitate the clinics, further integrating community involvement into the program. Importantly, the entire initiative comes at no cost to the schools or the district, as funding is fully covered by the LA84 Foundation.

The program is set to kick off with its first test school in about two months, marking a promising step towards enhancing youth engagement and health in the San Bernardino community. The council expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, recognizing its potential impact on local youth.
