GRID Alternatives seeks lease for new community solar farm in Pueblo

The Pueblo West Board of Directors convened on April 28, 2025, to discuss several key agenda items, with a significant focus on a proposed community solar farm project. The meeting began with an overview of the project, which has been in development since 2019, supported by the district through various approvals, including a lease option.

The project, presented by Joel Danforth from GRID Alternatives, aims to establish a community solar farm that will provide low-income households with access to more affordable energy. Danforth explained that the initiative includes a membership component, allowing community members to invest in the solar program, ultimately leading to reduced energy costs for participants.

Danforth highlighted GRID Alternatives' experience, noting that the nonprofit has installed approximately 22,000 solar systems nationwide, nearing a milestone of 100 megawatts of energy capacity. The organization also emphasizes workforce development, having trained over 49,000 individuals in solar installation.

The proposed site for the solar farm is located northeast of the Super Walmart in Pueblo West, between McCulloch Boulevard and Industrial Boulevard. Danforth shared design plans for the facility, which will utilize single-axis trackers that adjust to follow the sun throughout the day.

During the presentation, technical difficulties arose with the slide sharing, prompting board members to assist in ensuring the public could view the materials. Despite these challenges, the board expressed support for the project, recognizing its potential benefits for the community.

As the meeting progressed, the board discussed the next steps for formalizing the lease agreement with GRID Alternatives, indicating a commitment to advancing the project.
