City contracts StarTech for fire safety upgrades at facilities

In the heart of Los Alamos County, a recent meeting of the Board of Public Utilities illuminated critical safety upgrades planned for a local facility. As discussions unfolded, the focus turned to fire risk mitigation following a recent incident that prompted a thorough evaluation by the loss prevention agency, StarTech.

The agency's report outlined three key recommendations aimed at enhancing safety. The first suggestion involved constructing a concrete barrier wall outside the facility, a measure designed to provide an additional layer of protection. The second recommendation called for relocating an outside transformer, a task that would require significant structural engineering to ensure the equipment could be safely moved approximately 25 feet away from the building. However, the costs associated with this option raised concerns among board members.

Ultimately, the board opted for the third recommendation, which involved installing two layers of 5/8-inch gypsum board to bolster fire safety. This choice, while less costly than relocating the transformer, still necessitated extensive work, including removing the existing exterior panels and replacing them with the new fire-resistant material.

In addition to these safety enhancements, the project aims to improve the facility's administrative space, providing more room for staff. Plans also include adding a concrete pad for equipment storage over a septic tank, enhancing safety during equipment handling. Furthermore, a restroom addition is set to improve working conditions for employees.

Originally budgeted at $350,000 for the fiscal year 2025, the project’s total cost has now risen to $409,207.95, including gross receipts tax. This increase has prompted the board to seek an additional $53,000 to cover the unexpected expenses.

As Los Alamos County moves forward with these vital upgrades, the commitment to safety and improved working conditions stands as a testament to the community's dedication to protecting both its facilities and its workforce.
