The Caledonia Community Schools Board of Education convened on May 19, 2025, to discuss several key initiatives aimed at enhancing educational opportunities and student wellness in the district.
One of the standout topics was the introduction of the MIRA program, designed for middle school students to gain early exposure to manufacturing and trade skills. Superintendent Dr. Diaz highlighted that this initiative, supported by a grant from Kent ISD, will allow students to earn certifications before graduating high school. The program is set to launch in the fall with a single elective, with plans to expand into a comprehensive STEM offering over the next few years. This initiative aims to better prepare students for the workforce and address the growing demand for skilled labor in the community.

The committee has focused on promoting nutrition and physical activity among students and families. Notable initiatives include distributing flyers with healthy snack ideas and introducing "mood-boosting foods" to encourage students to try new, nutritious options. These efforts aim to enhance student well-being and support their academic performance.
The meeting also celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2025, with 184 students recognized for their academic accomplishments during a recent senior recognition night. The board expressed excitement for the upcoming commencement ceremony scheduled for the following evening at Calvin College.
Overall, the discussions at the May board meeting reflect a commitment to improving educational pathways and student health, aligning with the district's broader goals of fostering a supportive and enriching environment for all students.
