County Council proposes $953 million budget with minimal 3.5% increase

Hawaii County is set to adopt a proposed budget of approximately $953 million for the upcoming fiscal year, marking a modest 3.5% increase from last year's budget. This increase is the smallest seen in the past five years, reflecting a conservative and fiscally responsible approach to county finances.

The budget proposal comes alongside a significant rise in real property taxes, which have increased by $12.7 million, or 7%. This increase is intended to help offset the budget growth while reducing the county's reliance on its fund balance, which will see a decrease of $4.3 million.

Key allocations within the budget include a notable $10 million transfer to the Infrastructure Capital Improvement Program (ICIP), aimed at enhancing county facilities. Additionally, $1 million is earmarked for repairs within the Department of Public Works, and another $1 million is designated for employee compensation. Public safety expenditures are also prioritized, with $633,000 allocated for related services.

The budget reflects a commitment to maintaining essential services while strategically investing in infrastructure and public safety, ensuring that Hawaii County is prepared for future challenges.
