Greenwood City Council approves new apartment complex and electric bike shop plans

The Greenwood City Council convened on May 19, 2025, to address several key agenda items, including ordinance considerations and community initiatives. The meeting began with a motion to postpone the discussion of a specific ordinance until the next meeting on June 16, which passed unanimously.

The council then moved on to consider Ordinance Number 25-008, which authorizes the city manager to execute an upgrade agreement with the Lakeland's Toro Soccer Club. This agreement aims to renew the lease until December 31, 2035, with budgeted funds allocated for site improvements. The council unanimously approved this ordinance after confirming there were no public comments in opposition.

Next, the council reviewed a rezoning request for a property located at 202 Mineral Court. The proposal seeks to change the zoning from R-10 to a master-planned residential site to facilitate the construction of 60 apartment units. This development aligns with the Westside master plan and aims to provide additional housing in the area. The council discussed the density increase from 10 to nearly 20 units per acre, emphasizing the inclusion of amenities and open space in the design. After a thorough discussion, the council approved Ordinance Number 25-009 with a vote of 6 to 1.

The meeting also featured a public comment from Andrew Ellenberg, co-founder of an electric bicycle company, who expressed concerns about cyclist safety in Greenwood. He highlighted the need for improved infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of cyclists and discussed his business plans, which include sales and rentals of electric bicycles.

In new business, the council appointed Keith Jamieson to the Accommodation Tax Advisory Committee, recognizing his community involvement since returning to Greenwood in 2020. The appointment was met with unanimous support.

Lastly, the council acknowledged the Mayor's Youth Council for their successful community service fundraiser, which raised $1,816.30, supplemented by a $1,000 donation from County Bank, bringing the total to $2,816. The council expressed gratitude for the youth's efforts and the support from local sponsors.
