Mount Airy Planning Commission approves final site plan for new medical services buildings

The Mount Airy Planning Commission made significant strides towards enhancing local healthcare services during their meeting on May 19, 2025, by advancing the final site plan for the Southside Plaza Medical Services buildings. This development, which includes two new structures dedicated to medical offices and a rehabilitation center for Alzheimer's and dementia patients, is poised to address the growing healthcare needs of the community.

Located just south of Papa John's Pizza, the 1.08-acre project has been in the works since October 2023, when the applicant first sought a variance to exceed the existing square footage limits. After receiving approval, the project progressed through various stages, including a concept plan review in July 2024, where the Planning Commission emphasized the need for architectural improvements to ensure the buildings harmonize with the surrounding area.

The revised designs, presented in September 2024, were well-received, showcasing a more cohesive aesthetic that aligns with nearby structures. The Planning Commission's approval of the final site plan comes with several conditions, including the need for final approvals from the Town Engineer regarding water and sewer allocations, and compliance with fire safety regulations as stipulated by the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company.

Commission members expressed optimism about the project, highlighting its importance in meeting the healthcare demands of an aging population. The approval marks a crucial step forward in bringing much-needed medical services to Mount Airy, with the expectation that construction will soon commence, pending the fulfillment of all regulatory requirements.
