Hillsborough Township declares May as Milkweed for Monarchs Month to support butterfly population

Hillsborough Township has officially declared May as "Milkweed for Monarchs Month," a significant step in the effort to protect the declining monarch butterfly population. During the Township Committee meeting on March 25, 2025, officials highlighted the alarming 90% decrease in monarch numbers over recent decades, attributing this decline primarily to the loss of milkweed, the essential plant for their survival.

The committee urged residents to plant milkweed and nectar plants to provide vital resources for these iconic butterflies, known for their striking orange wings and remarkable migration journey from Mexico and California. The mayor and committee members emphasized the importance of community involvement in reversing this trend, calling on local citizens to take action and contribute to the preservation of the species.

In addition to the proclamation, plans for educational gardens at the municipal building and local parks were discussed, aimed at inspiring residents to participate in the initiative. Flyers with information about the project will be distributed, although the actual planting of flowers will begin in mid-April when nurseries are stocked.

This initiative not only seeks to raise awareness about the plight of the monarch butterfly but also aims to foster a sense of community responsibility towards environmental conservation.
