Nebraska partners secure grants for extensive aquatic habitat restoration across multiple lakes

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) held a meeting on May 23, 2025, to discuss the Nebraska Statewide/Aquatic Habitat Plan, focusing on various habitat restoration projects across the state. Key discussions included updates on ongoing projects, funding opportunities, and future initiatives aimed at enhancing aquatic habitats and improving angler access.

One significant topic was the planned restoration of 42 shoal habitats at Swanson and Medicine Creek, with a contractor expected to begin work in July or August. The projects are being funded through a 75% cost share with the Bureau, maximizing the use of state resources. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the dam at Lake Wakanehay, where modifications may require replacing riprap. This could lead to further projects at Lake McConaughey to address issues related to sand drift affecting boat ramps.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of bays for fish populations, particularly crappie, at Harlan County Reservoir. A feasibility study identified Methodist Cove as a priority for restoration, although funding limitations have restricted additional work on other bays. Collaboration with the Corps of Engineers was noted as a positive step towards future restoration efforts.

Another project discussed was the Windmill State Recreation Area (SRA), which is set to bid out restoration work on four lakes. This initiative includes improving angler access, excavating isolated areas during summer drawdowns, and implementing flood reduction measures. The NGPC secured a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund to support these efforts, which also involve creating floating islands to enhance fish habitats.

In the Southeast District, plans for 15 projects were proposed, including improvements at East and West Twin Reservoirs and 2 Rivers SRA. Enhancements will focus on angler access and upgrading boating facilities, which have been identified as needing significant improvements.
