Guilford County School Board honors students and recognizes outstanding educators and volunteers

The Guilford County Schools Board of Education meeting on May 13, 2025, began on a somber note as members honored the memory of two beloved students, Maura Erman Trout and Emmanuel Pull Pulliam, who passed away earlier in the school year. Board members expressed their condolences, celebrating the positive impact both students had on their school community. Maura, a student at Gateway Education Center, was remembered for her brilliance and advocacy for her peers, while Emmanuel was celebrated for his curiosity and vibrant spirit.

Following the memorial, the board recognized Dr. Jacqueline Tennant, who was awarded the 2024 North Carolina School Psychology Association Practitioner of the Year. Dr. Tennant highlighted the importance of mental health in education, emphasizing that public education serves as a vital tool for equity and opportunity. She expressed gratitude for the support of her colleagues and the board, reinforcing the role of school psychologists in fostering a safe and inclusive environment for students.

The meeting also acknowledged outstanding contributions from staff and volunteers. Tammy Pace, from General Greene Elementary, was named Employee of the Month for her dedication and service over more than 30 years. Meanwhile, Tijuana Stewart was recognized as Volunteer of the Month for her impactful mentorship at Welborn Academy, particularly in supporting eighth-grade students.

The board's agenda included a motion to amend the order of discussions, moving the facilities naming committee report to later in the meeting.
