Chatham High School's Tilden Wayne Motley heads to Bluefield College this fall

The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors held a meeting on May 23, 2025, where several key topics were discussed, including local educational initiatives, community service recognition, and upcoming events.

One of the highlights was the acknowledgment of Tilden Wayne Motley, a Chatham High School graduate who will attend Bluefield College in West Virginia this fall. The board discussed the summer internship program for local students, which is set to run from June through July 24. This year, 7 to 10 students from Pittsylvania County are expected to participate, following a successful reception that recognized 15 regional employers for their contributions to the program. The program aims to equip students with essential skills through an employee skills boot camp before they begin their internships.

Additionally, the Beautification Committee reported on its ongoing efforts, including county-wide cleanups and educational initiatives about littering. The committee is also seeking grant funding for signage to discourage littering.

The meeting included congratulations for Dr. Mark Jones on his retirement as superintendent of Pittsylvania County Schools, with Mr. Mayhew set to take over the role. The board members expressed gratitude for the interim leadership provided by Mr. Shorter and Mr. Arnold during the transition.

As Memorial Day approaches, the board emphasized the importance of honoring those who have served in the military, distinguishing it from Veterans Day, which celebrates living veterans.
