At the recent Socorro Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees meeting held on May 21, 2025, the community celebrated notable achievements and made significant decisions that will shape the future of local education.
The meeting opened with a heartfelt tribute to Montwood High School senior Eduardo Inojo, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. Inojo, an accomplished golfer, is set to graduate this June and has made history by being the only student from Montwood to qualify for the UIL regional tournament three consecutive years. His achievements highlight the dedication of students in SISD and the support they receive from their families and educators.

Subscribe for Free Interim Superintendent Mr. Vasquez took the opportunity to recognize various accomplishments within the district, including the recent celebration of partners in education and the announcement of the first-ever SISD District Support Employee of the Year, head custodian Jesus Salas. The board also acknowledged the district's teachers of the year, Edith Miranda and Michael Neff, who were honored at a gala earlier this month.
A significant highlight of the meeting was the announcement that SISD has earned the prestigious district STEM certification from the National Institute of STEM Education. This recognition places SISD among a select group of districts nationwide committed to excellence in STEM education. The certification reflects the hard work of educators and administrators in integrating STEM into the curriculum, ensuring students are prepared for a technology-driven future.
In terms of governance, the board elected new officers, with Mr. Mequenaga taking the role of board president, Mr. Paul Guerra as vice president, and Ms. Maribel Macias as board secretary. These appointments are expected to guide the board in its mission to enhance educational outcomes for all students.
Looking ahead, the district is gearing up for several important events, including a recruitment and enrollment expo scheduled for June 6, where families can learn about SISD programs and enroll their children on-site. The meeting concluded with a reminder of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday and the last day of school on June 5, marking the end of the academic year.
