Socorro High School unveils newly refurbished track after extensive renovations

The Socorro Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees made significant strides in addressing pressing infrastructure needs during their regular meeting on May 21, 2025. A key focus was the urgent need for HVAC system upgrades across the district, particularly in older buildings and even some newer facilities. Board member Mr. Crossco expressed his commitment to resolving these issues, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a comfortable learning environment for students and staff.

During the discussion, Director of Operations David Carrasco outlined the district's current HVAC challenges, noting that some systems are obsolete and difficult to repair due to supply chain issues exacerbated by the pandemic. He estimated that a complete replacement of certain systems would cost approximately $2.9 million, while only $1.7 million is currently available from the 2017 bond fund. Legal counsel confirmed that the proposed upgrades fall within the scope of the original bond approval, allowing the district to proceed with necessary maintenance and upgrades.

The board also discussed the potential impact of funding limitations, with Mr. Crossco inquiring about how many areas could be addressed if additional funds were available. Carrasco indicated that with an extra $730,000, the district could potentially fix two more HVAC areas, highlighting the ongoing struggle to maintain functional systems.

In addition to HVAC concerns, the board approved the final payment for the refurbishment of the track at Socorro High School. Carrasco showcased the transformation of the facility, which had fallen into disrepair, and expressed pride in providing a state-of-the-art track for student athletes. He invited board members to visit and see the improvements firsthand, underscoring the district's commitment to enhancing athletic facilities.
