Sarasota County Schools expand summer food program to support local children

Sarasota County Schools is set to launch its Summer Food Program on June 4, 2025, providing essential meals to children in the community during the summer months when school is not in session. This initiative, which began in 1997, aims to bridge the gap in food access for students who rely on school meal programs during the academic year.

Sara Dan, the Director of Food and Nutrition Services, emphasized the program's significance, stating that it serves any child aged 18 and under, regardless of their school affiliation. This inclusivity ensures that all children in the community can receive nutritious meals, with breakfast and lunch available daily from Monday to Friday. In some areas, dinner will also be provided, along with weekend food supplies through partnerships with local organizations like All Fates Food Bank.

The program has evolved over the years, responding to community needs and feedback. Last summer, over 105,000 meals were served, highlighting the growing demand for food assistance. The shift from cold meals to hot, nutritious options has significantly increased participation, as children are more likely to eat meals that are appealing and satisfying.

The Summer Food Program will run until July 25, 2025, with meals served at various locations, including schools and community centers.
