The awards celebrated various student achievements, beginning with Joey Balamente from Gilbert High, who qualified for the national speech and debate tournament, placing sixth at the Arizona District Tournament. He will represent Gilbert Public Schools in Des Moines, Iowa, this June and plans to attend Harvard University in the fall.
Next, Andreas Vidalis, the Arizona Junior High Bull Riding Champion, was recognized for maintaining a 3.5 GPA while competing in bull riding. He expressed his excitement about competing in Iowa as well.
The Battle of the Books competition was also acknowledged, with Neely Traditional School's team, the "Synonym Rules," taking second place in the district and region. Their librarian, Kelly Fairchild, introduced the team members, who shared their favorite books.
Islands Elementary's team, consisting of Eliza and Macy, secured third place in the same competition. Their coach, Allison Hunt, praised their hard work and resilience.
The meeting concluded with a recognition of the Campo Verde High indoor percussion ensemble, which won the Winter Guard Arizona State Championship. The ensemble, consisting of 30 members, showcased their dedication and talent, with students introducing themselves and expressing pride in their achievements.
Overall, the meeting highlighted the accomplishments of students across various disciplines, fostering a sense of community and support within Gilbert Public Schools. The board expressed gratitude for the students' hard work and dedication, setting a positive tone for future endeavors.
