The Stuart City Commission meeting on May 12, 2025, featured a significant presentation from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) regarding proposed changes to the intersection of US 1 and Southwest Palm City Road. The meeting aimed to address ongoing traffic safety concerns and improve traffic flow in the area.
Harissa Sosa, a project development manager with FDOT, outlined the current conditions at the intersection, noting that the southbound approach allows for a free flow of traffic, which has led to speeding issues. In response to these concerns, a feasibility study was conducted in early 2023, resulting in the identification of several alternatives to enhance safety and efficiency at the intersection.

However, this proposal faced challenges during the review process, leading to a reevaluation by FDOT. The new concept presented at the meeting is a modern roundabout designed to accommodate both regular vehicles and larger delivery trucks, aiming to maintain traffic flow while reducing speeds.
Sosa emphasized that the modern roundabout would improve the level of service at the intersection, providing a smoother traffic experience compared to the previously suggested alternatives. The roundabout is expected to enhance safety for pedestrians and drivers alike, with additional features such as rumble strips and pedestrian crossings.
Commission members expressed concerns about the decision-making process, questioning why the roundabout was proposed after extensive community workshops had already taken place. Sosa assured the commission that community feedback would be sought again before finalizing the design, emphasizing the importance of public involvement in the planning process.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from FDOT to engage with residents and gather their input on the new roundabout concept, ensuring that community preferences are considered in the final design. The next steps will involve setting up additional presentations and workshops to facilitate further discussion and feedback from the public.
