Orange County plans 35 new summer intern positions in Human Resources Department

The Orange County Ways and Means Committee convened on April 22, 2025, to discuss the proposal for creating 35 new state intern positions within the Department of Human Resources. The proposed intern positions would offer salaries ranging from the New York State minimum wage of $15.50 to a maximum of $25 per hour, with an average wage set at $20.25. Each intern would work between 20 to 40 hours per week for a duration not exceeding 90 days, with the total budget for the program capped at $300,000.

During the meeting, it was noted that there has been significant interest from department heads in hiring interns, with 17 out of 26 respondents expressing support for the initiative. The committee emphasized that this program is intended to enhance the existing internship framework, which has seen limited participation in the past, with only five or six interns reported last year.

Concerns were raised regarding the workload associated with supervising interns, as some departments may not have the capacity to manage additional staff effectively. However, the committee believes that the program will provide essential support to departments that are struggling with staffing and retention issues.

The discussion also touched on the potential for interns to transition into permanent positions within the county, particularly in departments that have faced challenges in filling vacancies. The committee is optimistic that this initiative will not only benefit the interns but also help address staffing shortages in various county departments.
