City of Santa Fe launches comprehensive youth programs for recreation and education

The City of Santa Fe is enhancing its commitment to youth development with a robust array of after-school and summer programs designed to engage children and support families. During the recent Quality of Life Committee meeting, city officials highlighted the comprehensive offerings available to elementary-aged children, which include daily after-school care, school closure day camps, and a summer youth program.

The after-school program, held at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center (GCC), provides transportation from local schools and features a variety of activities such as sports, arts and crafts, and field trips. With a staff-to-child ratio of 15 to 1, the program can accommodate up to 90 participants, ensuring personalized attention. The monthly fee of $50 is structured to be affordable for families, and students receive a healthy snack and homework assistance.

In addition to regular after-school care, the city offers school closure day camps during breaks, including parent-teacher conferences and holidays. These camps run from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM and provide essential childcare, allowing parents to work while their children engage in structured activities. Fees for these camps are based on a sliding scale, ranging from $15 to $40 per day, making them accessible to a wider range of families.

The summer youth program is particularly noteworthy, featuring recreational activities across five schools in Santa Fe. This program runs Monday through Friday, also from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and includes breakfast and lunch provided by the Santa Fe Public Schools. Activities range from sports and arts to weekly field trips to local attractions like the Rio Grande Zoo and Explora. The program emphasizes safety and engagement, with a similar staff-to-child ratio and age-appropriate groupings.

To streamline the registration process, the city has implemented an online appointment system, allowing parents to secure spots without long waits. Early registration for city employees has also been introduced, reflecting a commitment to supporting city staff.

The collaboration with local organizations, such as the Community Educators Network, enriches the program by incorporating specialized educational activities. Each site will host partner programs weekly, ensuring a diverse and engaging experience for participants.
