Piedmont Hospital CEO updates board on $2.2M ARPA grant and expansion progress

Piedmont Newton Hospital is set to enhance healthcare access in the community following a significant update presented at the Newton County Board of Commissioners meeting on May 20, 2025. CEO Lindsay Petrini reported on the successful utilization of a $2.2 million ARPA grant, which has facilitated a crucial bed expansion and various service improvements at the hospital.

Petrini expressed gratitude for the funding, highlighting that it has been instrumental in addressing the growing healthcare needs of Newton County, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. The hospital received state approval for a 10% increase in bed capacity, which has been completed as of December 2024. This expansion is part of a broader $4 million project that includes additional capital investments from Piedmont.

The hospital has seen a dramatic rise in patient admissions, with over 600 recorded in April alone, underscoring the necessity for expanded services. In addition to the bed increase, Piedmont has invested in new oncology and rheumatology clinics, upgraded imaging technology, and enhanced its neonatal ICU to a level 3 facility, which currently cares for 13 infants.

Looking ahead, the hospital plans to open a heart failure clinic and has already secured five new healthcare providers across various specialties. Petrini also mentioned the reopening of the Cinderella shop, which supports community scholarships, and the expansion of the emergency department waiting area.

Commissioner Henderson raised concerns about parking availability at the hospital, noting that patients and visitors have expressed difficulties finding adequate parking. This issue is being prioritized as part of ongoing improvements to the hospital's infrastructure.
