Greeley High School is taking significant strides in mental health awareness with the launch of the Kyle Cares and Active Minds club, which aims to address the growing concerns surrounding student mental health and suicide prevention. During the MSAD 51 School Board meeting on January 2, 2024, school counselor Melissa Fowler, along with student leaders, presented the club's initiatives and successes, highlighting its importance in the community.
The club, which is one of only two in Maine to partner with Kyle Cares and Active Minds, has quickly gained traction since its inception last spring. With over 35 members, the club has organized various activities to promote mental health awareness, including participation in athletic events where students wear green to symbolize support for mental health initiatives. The club's efforts have already reached a wide audience, with successful presentations at multiple athletic competitions.
Fowler emphasized the urgency of addressing mental health issues among students, noting that many are struggling with academic pressures and personal challenges. The club's mission is to create a safe space for students to discuss these issues openly and to provide resources for those in need. The initiative aligns with MSAD 51's strategic wellness goals, aiming to foster a supportive environment for all students.
Upcoming events include a benefit concert and a 5K run/walk, both designed to raise funds for mental health programming and to further engage the community in these critical discussions. The club is also planning to host a speaker from the Minding Your Mind organization to provide additional resources and support for students and families.
The enthusiasm and commitment shown by the students and faculty reflect a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in education. As the Kyle Cares and Active Minds club continues to expand its reach, it aims to not only support Greeley High School students but also to inspire similar initiatives in other schools across the state.
