Macon County EMS proposes remount ambulance and additional staffing for service improvement

Emergency medical services took center stage at the Macon County Commissioners Meeting on May 22, 2025, as EMS Training Officer Gary McCabe presented a critical budget proposal aimed at enhancing local emergency response capabilities. McCabe emphasized the urgent need for a new ambulance and additional staffing to meet the rising demand for services in the area.

Currently, Macon County's EMS is fully staffed but faces significant challenges due to an increasing call volume, with nearly 1,500 more calls annually than in previous years. McCabe proposed reallocating funds from the budget to purchase a remounted ambulance, which would cost approximately $140,000, instead of waiting for a new ambulance that could take 18 to 24 months to build and cost $385,000. This remount would provide a new chassis while utilizing a used module, aligning with industry standards.

In addition to the remount, McCabe requested funding for two additional full-time positions to operate a day truck in the Franklin area four days a week. This move aims to improve response times in high-demand areas, particularly as 88.5% of call volume occurs in Franklin. While McCabe acknowledged the need for a seven-day-a-week operation, he stated that the proposed budget adjustments would significantly enhance service without increasing overall costs.

Commissioners expressed support for the proposal, recognizing the pressing need for improved emergency services. They discussed the importance of timely responses, especially for critical situations like strokes, where every minute counts. The board agreed to consider the remount and staffing adjustments, with plans to revisit the budget in mid-year reviews to ensure the county's EMS can effectively meet community needs.

The meeting underscored the ongoing challenges faced by rural emergency services and the necessity for proactive measures to ensure public safety. As Macon County continues to grow, the need for adequate emergency medical resources remains a top priority for local leaders.
