North Wasco School District outlines summer projects and literacy programs

The North Wasco County School District 21 held a regular school board meeting on May 22, 2025, focusing on several key initiatives aimed at improving student safety and educational opportunities.

One of the most significant discussions centered on a collaborative project between the school district and the city to enhance safety along West Tenth Street. This project will install new sidewalks from Hostetler to Floral Street and add two crosswalks equipped with flashing signals to alert drivers of pedestrians. The construction is set to begin after the school year ends, with a completion target of August 29, ensuring the improvements are ready for the new school year.

Additionally, the board discussed ongoing seismic work at Chenoweth Elementary School, which includes retrofitting the gymnasium and upgrading the office entry system. This project is also scheduled for completion before the start of the school year, with weekly progress meetings already in place.

The meeting also highlighted summer learning programs funded by a potential $415,000 grant. These programs will include a Jump Start Kindergarten initiative, credit recovery for high school students, and a targeted K-8 literacy program, which will be invitation-only this year. The focus on literacy aims to support students identified as needing additional help based on assessment data.

Community engagement was another focal point, with a recent resilience rally attracting over 400 high school students and numerous community partners. This event aimed to connect students with resources for mental health and wellness, emphasizing the importance of community support.

As the school year comes to a close, several graduation and promotion ceremonies are scheduled, including events for Innovations Academy, Dallas High School, Colonel Wright, and Dallas Middle School. The board encouraged community participation in these celebrations.
