Kenai Chamber plans Lemonade Day and movie night for summer community engagement

The City Council of Kenai, Alaska, convened on May 21, 2025, to discuss various community events and legislative matters. The meeting began with an invitation for public comments, during which Samantha Springer from the Kenai Chamber of Commerce provided updates on upcoming local events.

Springer announced that Lemonade Day is scheduled for June 14, with participation from both Kenai and Soldotna. Flyers have been distributed to local schools and the Boys and Girls Club to encourage participation. She also highlighted the Fourth of July parade and festivities, emphasizing the need for community involvement as the date approaches.

In addition, Springer mentioned the planning of a celebration for Peggy Arness' 100th birthday, in collaboration with the historical society. Industry Appreciation Day is set for August 23, with further details expected to be shared soon. Notably, Springer reported that the Chamber is now fully staffed for the summer, thanks to a partnership with the historical society that allows for cross-training of staff in various roles.

Council member Daniel expressed enthusiasm for Lemonade Day and inquired about online sign-ups, which Springer confirmed are now operational. The conversation shifted to a community movie night scheduled for that Friday, featuring the film "Wicked," with free popcorn provided.

Following public comments, the Council moved to public hearings, beginning with Ordinance Number 34702025. This ordinance proposes amendments to the official zoning map and land use table, specifically rezoning 28 properties near the intersection of Kenai Spur Highway and Wildwood Drive from suburban residential to another designation.

The meeting highlighted the Council's focus on community engagement and development, with several events aimed at fostering local participation and celebrating significant milestones. Further discussions on the zoning ordinance will continue as the Council reviews the implications of the proposed changes.
