Mayor Nunziato honors Rutherford Elks on 125th anniversary with proclamation

Under the warm glow of the Borough Hall lights, the Rutherford Council gathered on February 24, 2025, to celebrate a significant milestone for a cherished local institution. The evening began with a salute to the flag led by the Elks, setting a tone of community pride and unity.

Mayor Frank Nunziato opened the meeting by acknowledging the importance of transparency, noting that the gathering complied with the Open Public Meetings Law, ensuring that residents were informed and engaged. The agenda featured two key presentations, the highlight being the recognition of the Rutherford Elks Lodge 547 on its 125th anniversary.

Council member McGowan took center stage to read a heartfelt proclamation honoring the Elks for their longstanding commitment to the community. Established in 1900, the Elks Lodge has been a cornerstone of Rutherford, evolving from its humble beginnings with 42 members to a robust organization of over 325 today. The proclamation detailed the Elks' impressive contributions, including over $8 million in donations to various charitable causes and their recognition as the National All American Lodge by the National Elks Association.

The proclamation celebrated the Elks' mission to serve the community, support military members and veterans, and uplift local youth. Their proactive role during crises, such as providing relief during disasters, was also highlighted, showcasing their dedication to helping those in need.

As the council concluded the ceremony, the atmosphere was filled with gratitude and admiration for the Elks' enduring legacy.
