Main Event selects former Sears building for family entertainment center in Mesquite

Mesquite City is set to undergo a significant transformation as plans for the redevelopment of the former Sears building at Town East Mall move forward. During a recent city planning and zoning meeting, officials discussed the first phase of this revitalization, which includes the introduction of a family entertainment center known as Main Event.

The property, spanning over 18 acres, was sold to the current owner in 2020 after the Sears store closed its doors several years prior. The owner has been collaborating with the city's economic development department to create a revitalization plan aimed at attracting new tenants and enhancing the area.

Main Event is expected to occupy the first floor of the building, which will feature a full-service restaurant, bowling, laser tag, an arcade, and various party rooms. The entertainment center will cover approximately 58,000 square feet and is projected to create around 200 jobs. Operating hours will typically range from 11 AM to midnight, with extended hours on weekends.

The proposed site is located within the Town East restaurant retail area overlay district, which imposes additional requirements on development. However, the conditional use permit for Main Event will not be subject to the restrictions typically associated with this overlay. Surrounding properties are primarily commercial, with North Mesquite High School being the only exception, located across Interstate 635.

While no immediate improvements to the site are planned, the property owner is working with the city on future enhancements, which may include landscaping and space for additional businesses. This initial phase marks a crucial step in revitalizing the area, with further developments anticipated as the project progresses. The community can look forward to a vibrant new entertainment option that aims to attract visitors and boost local economic activity.
