City plans McGrath Park overhaul with state-of-the-art skate park and playground

Excitement buzzed through the Weatherford City Council meeting as plans for the revitalization of McGrath Grama Park took center stage. City officials unveiled a comprehensive design aimed at transforming the aging park into a modern, inclusive recreational space that caters to all community members.

The proposed upgrades include a state-of-the-art concrete skate park, a new playground, additional parking, improved restroom facilities, park lighting, and updated basketball courts. The skate park, designed to be accessible for all ages and abilities, will feature elements that accommodate wheelchairs, skateboards, bikes, and scooters, ensuring everyone can enjoy the space.

Mayor Pro Tem Wilder expressed enthusiasm for the project, hinting at a personal interest in trying out the new skate park. The design process will also consider the addition of a pump track, a popular new feature in modern skate parks, which allows users to navigate a track without needing to push off the ground.

A preliminary layout of the park was shared, highlighting the importance of maintaining open green spaces while integrating new amenities. The city is also exploring adjacent property to potentially expand the park further.

This ambitious project is backed by a $750,000 matching grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife, with plans to finalize the design by the end of the year and begin construction shortly thereafter. The city has selected MHS Planning and Design to lead the project, marking a significant step toward enhancing community recreation in Weatherford.
