Falmouth's Department of Public Works (DPW) is moving forward with a significant project aimed at improving local infrastructure, specifically the replacement of a bridge that has faced extensive permitting delays. During the Falmouth Water Quality Management Committee meeting on November 6, 2024, John Ramsey from Coastal Solutions provided an update on the project, which has been in the works since 2014.
Ramsey explained that the permitting process has been lengthy, primarily due to appeals from local residents that complicated the initial stages. After overcoming these hurdles, the town has finally secured all necessary permits, allowing them to proceed with the project. The bridge replacement is now in the hands of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), with plans to package the bridge work with other related projects to streamline the process.
Once construction begins, expected to start in the fall, the roadway across the bridge will be closed for two years. This closure is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient replacement of the bridge, which has been a critical infrastructure concern due to significant erosion on the west side of the beach.
The committee meeting served as a platform for gathering community input and sharing updates on the project, emphasizing the importance of public engagement in local infrastructure developments. As the project progresses, residents can anticipate both challenges and improvements to their local transportation network.
