Harbor Center BID establishes outdoor refreshment area for Eighth Street eatery events

In a recent meeting held at Sheboygan City Hall, city officials discussed a resolution aimed at enhancing local business support through the creation of a designated outdoor refreshment area (DORA) during the upcoming Eighth Streetery event series. This initiative, proposed for the summer of 2025, seeks to promote local cuisine and community engagement along Eighth Street, specifically between Center and Pennsylvania.

The DORA would allow patrons to carry and consume alcoholic beverages in designated areas on Eighth Street for ten Tuesdays throughout the summer, from 4 PM to 9 PM. This resolution is part of a broader effort by the Harbor Center Business Improvement District (BID) to foster a vibrant atmosphere that encourages foot traffic and supports local establishments.

During the meeting, officials emphasized the importance of a comprehensive contingency plan, which must be approved by the police and fire departments, as well as the city administrator, before the resolution can be finalized. Patrol Captain Joel Kosinski reassured attendees that past events had not encountered significant issues, noting that the safety plan submitted by the BID was satisfactory. He highlighted that signage would be installed to guide patrons on where they can carry alcohol, reinforcing the need for compliance with state laws regarding open containers.

Concerns were raised about potential violations, such as patrons bringing their own alcohol into the DORA area. Officials clarified that only beverages purchased from vendors within the designated area would be permitted, with enforcement measures in place to address any violations.

As the city prepares for this initiative, the DORA aims to create a lively and enjoyable atmosphere for residents and visitors alike, while simultaneously bolstering local businesses during the summer months.
