Victoria Recreation Center expands programs ahead of contract review with school district

The City of Victoria is set to enhance its community offerings as the Parks & Recreation Committee discussed the future of the Victoria Recreation Centre during their recent meeting. Originally built in 2002, the facility has evolved significantly, now featuring two ice rinks, a gymnasium, and various multipurpose spaces. Notably, the center operates without city tax support, relying instead on rental revenues and partnerships, particularly with the local school district.

The current agreement with the school district, which manages the ice rinks, is set to expire in 2032. As the committee anticipates changes, including the potential relocation of the Chanhassen Storm community center to the recreation facility, new opportunities for programming and space utilization are on the horizon. The center currently serves as a hub for local hockey teams, community events, and fitness activities, including open skate sessions and group fitness classes.

In addition to facility management, the Parks & Recreation Department is focused on expanding its programming to better meet community needs. The committee is actively seeking input from residents on desired activities and events, with plans to introduce more diverse offerings, including family events and senior programs.

Looking ahead, the committee is also prioritizing park engagement projects, aiming to involve the community in shaping the future of local parks and recreational spaces. This includes evaluating nontraditional park spaces and reviewing code ordinances related to park usage.
