North Austin Civic Association opposes new convenience store proposal amid safety concerns

Concerns over a proposed commercial development in North Austin took center stage at the Planning Commission meeting on May 27, 2025, as community members voiced strong opposition to the project. The discussions highlighted fears surrounding crime and safety linked to the applicant's existing convenience stores in the area.

Monica Guzman, chair of the North Austin Civic Association, expressed her group's opposition to the development, which was initially thought to be a convenience store. Guzman emphasized the neighborhood's apprehension, citing the applicant's ownership of multiple stores in high-crime areas known for drug activity and other safety issues. "We can't do that when we're working against or feel like we're being worked against on addressing issues to make it a better place," Guzman stated, underscoring the community's desire for a safer environment.

The applicant, represented by Mr. Whitliffe, assured the commission that the intention was to build a restaurant with outdoor seating, not a convenience store. However, Guzman and other residents remained skeptical, fearing that the project could still lead to undesirable business practices and exacerbate existing problems in the neighborhood.

Melinda Shira, another speaker at the meeting, echoed these concerns, noting that the Austin Police Department had previously urged the applicant to cease selling single-serve alcohol and THC products at his stores, which have been linked to criminal activity. "The common threads identified were the issue of particular convenience stores and their common business owner that were supporting a criminal environment," Shira explained.

As the Planning Commission deliberates on the proposal, the community's call for a more proactive approach to safety and development remains clear. The outcome of this meeting could significantly impact the future of North Austin's commercial landscape and the safety of its residents.
