Council approves special use permit for hookah lounge expansion at West FM 544

Wylie City Council has taken significant steps to enhance local business opportunities during their recent meeting on May 27, 2025. The council approved two special use permits (SUP) that will allow for the expansion of a hookah lounge and the introduction of a drone delivery service in the city.

The first decision involved a zoning change for an existing hookah lounge located at 2771 West FM 544. The lounge, which has been operating under a legally nonconforming status since before the smoking ordinance was enacted in June 2023, sought to expand its space from 1,800 to 2,700 square feet. The additional area will primarily be used for food service, while maintaining the establishment's core function as a hookah lounge. The council emphasized that all smoking activities will be confined indoors, addressing concerns about potential impacts on nearby neighborhoods. The motion to approve the SUP passed unanimously, reflecting the council's support for local business growth.

In a second notable decision, the council approved a SUP for a drone delivery service operated by Flytrex at 709 Cooper Drive. This service will utilize drones capable of carrying up to 6.5 pounds for deliveries within a five-mile radius. The operation will include 14 launch pads and will be limited to daylight hours, with a maximum operational window from 8 AM to 9:30 PM. The council noted that the drones will be regulated by the FAA, ensuring compliance with safety standards. The approval of this service marks a significant step towards integrating innovative delivery solutions in Wylie, with the potential to enhance convenience for residents.
